Oral communication imparts meaning and intent through word choice, verbal inflection and body language. Because these conversations are usually face-to-face, clarifications come in the form of questions and answers. Most conversations are casual in nature, and the participants interact with each other for effective communication.

Written communication, however, is more of a one-sided operation. Words, phrasing and punctuation establish the framework for the monologue. Sentence structure is vital; therefore, it is imperative that the author takes care to compose the exact meaning or idea and present the piece in a style that is certain to be understood. Several pitfalls await the writer as he or she constructs the written presentation. Some of them are:

· Homonyms are words that have the same spelling but often have diverse or dissimilar meanings. One example, saw, can mean several things: 1. To have seen something, 2. A tool that cuts by abrasive movement, or 3. An adage or wise saying. The surrounding context alludes to the correct meaning. Words that sound the same but have different spellings also fall under this category.

· Correct punctuation is necessary to impart the meaning of a phrase or sentence. “Let’s eat, Bill” and “Let’s eat Bill” carry two completely different meanings based a single punctuation mark, the comma.

· Correct spelling is important because an incorrect spelling can alter the meaning of a phrase or sentence. Additionally, spelling, punctuation and grammar present the writer as either knowledgeable, ignorant or somewhere in between.

All of this can be daunting to individuals who are native speakers. For those for whom English is a second language, they often struggle even more with the written word. There is software that teaches students how to speak properly. Would it not be helpful to have writing software to assist in learning how to write well? Most word-processing programs actually have spell check software. Many of these packages also have punctuation and grammar checker tools. Other writing software programs, like text editor, may not have these valuable functions. Text boxes on social networking and similar sites have no writing assistance at all. What we need is writing software that integrates with all of our writing venues.

WhiteSmoke 2011, an innovative English language writing software, accomplishes that very objective. Based on the science of Natural Language Processing, also called NLP, WhiteSmoke integrates with just about any computer program that allows you to type text. NLP is a subset of Artificial Intelligence programming and constantly updates itself. The huge database of information is stored online on the WhiteSmoke servers. While this means that you must be connected to the Internet to use the program, it also means that valuable disk space remains available for your documents, files and folders.

Because different styles of writing require different grammar rules, WhiteSmoke has several versions of its writing software. The general version covers basic grammar and punctuation rules, while the bio-tech, creative writing and business versions cover those respective fields. The WhiteSmoke Executive version, which this author uses, covers all of those fields and a few that are not available separately. All versions check for grammar and punctuation errors, along with writing style improvements and suggestions. Changes accepted in WhiteSmoke writing software update immediately in a document.

A few other tools that are included are boilerplate templates, such as an online dictionary lookup feature, a thesaurus and a multiple language translator. The style checker warns you of redundant wording and awkward sentence structure. In this author’s own personal comparison test between WhiteSmoke and the grammar checker in Word 2010, both worked well in the spelling checks. WhiteSmoke did, however, find several grammar and style issues that Word did not find. Additionally, WhiteSmoke often gave suggestions for revisions while Word only advised to revise.

WhiteSmoke writing software even works with text programs that do not have editorial tools. Notepad, Web site text boxes and email programs all work with the software. Prices range from $150 to $250 for the various versions, but WhiteSmoke often runs special pricing offers. You will certainly find a package that suits your needs.
